Definition of Interior Design

"Interior design describes a group of various yet related projects that involve turning an interior space into an effective setting for the range of human activities that are to take place there. An interior designer is someone who conducts such projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession that includes conceptual development, liaising with the stakeholders of a project and the management and execution of the design." - Wikipedia
TRUE THAT!

For me, Interior Design is a mixture of art and science.  It is putting the freedom of fantasy into a substantial reality.  It is being able to bring a dream into an awake state - to something very tangible and very functional and valuable.  It's bringing the heart of the wholeness in the construction world.  The aspects in the field of interior design touch the closest relationship to the user.  From the floor surface that one walks to, to the cushion one sits upon, even to the daintiest spoon, or the aura we feel when we close our eyes – the interior designer can put it all into cohesion.

Interior design is not just beautification - more importantly, it's function.  Though an interior designer must be never empty of ephemeral and long-lasting inspirational ideas; the interior designer must also be backed up with technical skills in order to put the design in mind into a concrete and useful one.  It may generally start with the space planning of the given area.  And the profession proceeds to how the interior traffic should flow, the color, the lighting, the ambient of the room, where should an item be located, what material is to be used, and how it should be constructed.  These are just a few things to keep in mind when we want an idea to be put into fruition.  All of these should lead to the enhancement of the user's experience with the space - to give the area its design purpose and to please the senses along the line.
The floor plan peeking behind the sketch of a girl shows the  initial dimensions of the proposed
floor plan for the first image shown above.  Design is not just eye-visualization, but also doing
a lot of technical things to accomplish the design in mind with its valuable purpose.

Interior design involves an interpersonal relationship between the interior designer and the person (client) who wants the service.  An interior designer must be able to listen to what the client wants, and most of all needs.  An interior designer’s decision does not only depend on the client’s preferences.  Being the person with the know -how in the design field, an interior designer should be the one to lead the client’s idea into a more gratifying one.  Interior designers should have a deep sense of what this client desire beyond the words the client can describe.  Aside from that, an interior designer also coordinates with various suppliers, contractors and other personas in the design build business.  Being able to synchronize various views from the electrical engineers, architects, plumbers, etc., will definitely bring a project in the highest realistic success.   As I always say, Interior Design is 10% drawing.  The implementation of the drawings also relies partly on the interior designer’s skill in negotiating with diverse people working on the construction field.  An interior designer should be proficient in being a team leader in terms of design, and a good team player as a whole.
(I was just kidding around when I made this. hehehe)

Interior design requires good managerial skills.  Every aspect of the work should be managed accordingly with schedules of when an item should be constructed at site, when the furniture should go in and a hundred more things to consider in order having continuous flow in the design work.  And we are not just talking about time management, human resource is also a skill to develop due to different people work in a particular project; carpenters, electricians, plumbers, engineers, architects are just to name a few.  There are also budget constraints, building permits, zoning laws and the likes.  Every facet to get an interior design done must be set into the interior designer’s mind whichever calls for attention.  These are the standard procedures, force majeure should also be considered as part of the whole design plan.

Shown is tool I use to manage the time for the entire interior design works of the project I handled.
Notice that I also take note of the holidays.  This also serves as a general overview of the things I need to do and as a punch list as well. I hope I can discuss this further on my following posts.
Though I may seem to have enumerated a number of things, I have separated it into four distinct aspects in defining the career of interior design.  But I tell you, there are a lot more to discover in this field of work which I will be willing to share in this site on the following posts to come.

I invite you to JOIN me and SUBSCRIBE via email to get updates.  And PLEASE do leave comments and thoughts on the topics I post –  it’s definitely a pleasure to discuss art and design stuffs with people who share the same interest with.
